5 Mistakes To Avoid When Wearing Perfume
Perfumes have been around longer than you think – it started more or less around 4000 years ago with the creation of incense. And since then, we’ve come a long way in crafting and wearing these olfactory paradises that we oh, so crave. Now it has become a staple of most people’s routines that they can’t leave the house without a spritz of perfume. But did you know that a lot of folks still make mistakes when wearing these pleasant aromas? Which, unfortunately, makes them stale and lose their punch by the time they hit the door.
Here at Scentses + Co, we want to give you the best perfume experience possible. So, here are a few pointers on what to avoid when wearing your much-loved perfume. Just keep these in mind and in no time, your scents will last longer, hit the right notes, and give everyone a lasting impression of you (the good kind!).
1. Hygiene beats everything
When painters start to work on their canvas, they prep it first to make sure they have a clean, blank slate to work on, free of unnecessary blemishes that could affect their lovely masterpieces. The same can be said for your body and perfume—your body being the canvas and the perfume as the paint.
With that, we can’t stress enough how hygiene should go first. Don’t douse yourself in perfume if you haven’t taken a thorough bath in 3 days. It won’t mask any body odour you’ve been cultivating for quite some time. In fact, it’ll just make it worse. Awful aromas will cut through any perfume no matter how elegant it is. That’s just how it is—perfumes and bad hygiene, they’re like oil and water; they don’t mix.
2. Dry skin is a no-go!
And we’re back with another painting reference! Kidding aside, when it comes to painting, whether it’s a canvas, a bike, or furniture, a coat of primer is in order. This helps the paint stick to the surface and avoid drippage and uneven adhesion.
Now let’s take this same concept and apply it to wearing perfumes. If you can’t tell by now, spritzing your perfume on your ashy skin won’t do you any good. The aroma has nothing to stick onto and will dissipate way too quickly, leaving you sad and not smelling your best. An easy way to alleviate this is to wear an unscented lotion that will help keep those lovely scents locked on your skin and keep you smelling great for the rest of the day.
3. Don’t rub it in
We’re all guilty of this at some point in time–a spray on the back of the wrist and an immediate rubbing with the other. Now, what people see as a way to disperse their perfume actually hurts the scent way more than they think. When you rub the perfume, you mix and damage those molecules with the oil of your skin. When this happens, the fragrance doesn’t get a chance to breathe and dissipate naturally. This can be more evident if you have a multi-layer perfume (aromas that unravel themselves the longer you wear them, e.g. top notes, mid-notes, base notes).
As a precaution, try breaking the mannerism that after a spray, you rub it in. Remember, rub it in, and you’ll smell like the rubbish bin.
4. Less is more
The saying “too much of anything is bad for you” bears truth, and it applies the same way with fragrances. Have you ever been to an event or a party and all of a sudden you get punched in the face by a strong aroma? That’s the result of over-spritzing. Now, nobody likes to get an unsolicited headache. So, to help everyone and yourself, avoid dousing the whole bottle on your skin.
To find the right balance of perfume sprays, you need to know the scent profile and the concentration level of your fragrance. If you have a strong, musky, bold scent, it might not be a great idea to spritz yourself 20 times. But if you have a soft fragrance, then maybe you could get away with 5-8. This is all circumstantial as the best way to go about this is to try it out. Knowing whether your fragrance is an EDT or EDP also helps, as these state the fragrance oil concentration in the bottle.
5. Using the same perfume again and again
Imagine this: You’ve finally found your signature scent, your perfume that will cover you for the rest of your life. You love it so much that you use it every day, and you don’t even bother with the others. Then, you notice the once colourful and inviting fragrance is no more. Now, when you take a sniff, it smells like it’s been diluted with water.
That’s something to avoid, especially if you’ve spent an exuberant amount of money on a bottle of perfume. The reason that could happen is that you’ve been so accustomed to that smell to the point that it no longer holds any punch for you. The easy solution is to just mix up the perfumes you’ll be wearing every now and then. Match the mood of the day or whatever your vibe is. Variety and new smells are always welcome in the world of beautiful aromas, so don’t be afraid to go out of your norm and spice things up.
